Niagara's South Coast
Niagara's South Coast
My Perfect Summer Day in Niagara's South Coast (And the Hidden Gem I Can't Stop Thinking About)
If you're anything like me, you know I love a good day trip. There's just something about packing up the car, grabbing a coffee, and spending the day exploring somewhere new that always leaves me feeling refreshed.
I have explored quite a few areas across Niagara over the years, but this summer I discovered a part of Niagara's South Coast that I had somehow never experienced before, and honestly, I can't believe I waited this long.
The Pelham area completely surprised me.
It felt peaceful, beautiful, welcoming, and exactly the kind of place that reminds you to slow down. Between hiking through nature, enjoying incredible local food, wandering charming shops, and taking in beautiful scenery, it quickly became one of my favourite summer day trips. It honestly feels like one of Niagara's best kept secrets.
If you're planning a Niagara day trip or looking for somewhere new to explore this summer, I couldn't recommend Niagara's South Coast more.
Why You Need to Visit Niagara's South Coast
When most people think of Niagara, they immediately picture the Falls, but there's so much more to discover beyond the tourist hotspots.
Niagara's South Coast is made up of four unique communities: Pelham, Port Colborne, Fort Erie, and Wainfleet. Each one offers something completely different, from beautiful beaches and waterfronts to wineries, hiking trails, conservation areas, local shops, and incredible restaurants.
Whether you're looking for a relaxing weekend getaway, a fun date day, a girls' trip, or a family adventure, Niagara's South Coast has something for everyone. It's the kind of destination where you can spend one day or an entire weekend and still feel like you've only scratched the surface.
What I loved most was how relaxed everything felt. There was no rushing from one stop to the next. Every place encouraged us to slow down, enjoy the moment, and appreciate everything around us. It really is the perfect destination if you're looking for a day that leaves you feeling better than when you arrived.
My Perfect Niagara's South Coast Summer Itinerary
Start your morning with something healthy
Our first stop was Rise Energy Bar in Fonthill(Town of Pelham)
I ordered the Banana Bread Shake with protein, and I already know I'll be ordering it again the next time I visit. It was the perfect way to start the day before heading out on a hike. They also have healthy teas, coffees, dirty sodas, and so many fun drink options that make choosing just one difficult.
Explore Short Hills Provincial Park
Next, we headed to Short Hills Provincial Park.
If you love getting outside, you're going to love this spot. The trails are surrounded by beautiful greenery, and hiking to Swayze Falls was easily one of my favourite parts of the day.
It wasn't just about getting some steps in. It was one of those moments where you stop, take a deep breath, and realize how good it feels to disconnect from your phone, move your body, and simply enjoy nature.
Whether you're visiting with your partner, family, or friends, it's such a great activity to add to your Niagara's South Coast itinerary.
Lunch at Sons & Daughters Winery
After our hike, we were definitely ready for lunch, and Sons & Daughters Winery did not disappoint.
The outdoor patio is absolutely beautiful and has such a relaxing atmosphere. It feels like one of those places where you lose track of time because you're enjoying yourself so much.
If you visit, you have to try one of their pizzas. They were honestly so delicious and would make the perfect lunch for a date day, girls' outing, or family afternoon. The winery is full of character with thoughtfully restored pieces and beautiful details everywhere you look.
Don't Skip Farmers Daughter Flower Shack
Right beside the winery is Farmers Daughter Flower Shack.
This ended up being one of those unexpected little stops that made the day even more memorable. I loved walking through all of the beautiful flowers, and if you're anything like me, you'll probably end up bringing home some flowers too.
Browse Hamiltons of Pelham
One of my favourite things about day trips is discovering local shops you would never have found otherwise.
Hamiltons of Pelham is full of beautiful home décor, artwork, gifts, and outdoor garden pieces. I could have wandered around for so much longer because every corner had something unique. If you love decorating your home or finding thoughtful gifts, definitely make time for this stop.
Visit Canada's Oldest Maple Tree
Before wrapping up our day, we stopped at Comfort Maple Conservation Area.
Standing beside Canada's oldest maple tree honestly felt pretty special. Some places don't need a lot of explanation. They're simply somewhere you have to experience for yourself, and this was definitely one of those places.
End the day with gelato
No summer day trip is complete without a sweet treat.
We finished the day with gelato and enjoyed a slow walk while soaking in the last bit of sunshine. It was the perfect ending to a day that left us feeling refreshed, relaxed, and already talking about when we'd come back.
Why I'll Be Coming Back
Sometimes the best places aren't the ones everyone is talking about.
They're the ones you stumble across, spend the entire day smiling, and leave already planning your next visit.
That's exactly how I felt about Niagara's South Coast.
If you're looking for a summer itinerary that combines hiking, wineries, local shopping, great food, beautiful scenery, and plenty of opportunities to slow down, I can't recommend this area enough.
Pelham may have been my newest discovery, but it definitely won't be my last visit. After spending the day there, I left feeling refreshed, recharged, and already thinking about all the other places I want to explore across Niagara's South Coast.
From the beaches and waterfront in Port Colborne to the peaceful countryside in Wainfleet and the history and shoreline in Fort Erie, each community offers something completely different. That's what makes Niagara's South Coast so special. Every visit gives you a chance to discover somewhere new.
If you're planning a summer day trip, don't just visit one spot. Make time to explore all of Niagara's South Coast because you never know which hidden gem will end up becoming your favourite.
